Fast Your Way to the Future

Fast Your Way to the Future

For years, I have never been a true believer of fasting. The thought of not eating for 3 days or more is a concept- that I thought to believe –was only for monks up on the hills in Tibet. Why fast when there are so many people starving in the first place?

Well, years later, I found myself a boyfriend, who was well into new and trendy health theories, and who convinced me that this is just the perfect ingredient for a clear mind and healthy body. A couple of days later, and there I was – saying no to food for 3 days in my beautiful kitchen in the middle of Cape Town.

Why Fast? That’s a Perfectly Valid Question

I didn’t only begin fasting for the obvious reasons – losing weight. I was healthy and lean but I was curious to clear the so-called “brain fog” and a reboot of the immune system, which promised a true mental benefit and a test to my own strength of self-discipline.

Benjamin Hardy, a psychologist and best selling author says:

“Fasting is essentially the putting-off of the physical to tap into higher realms of meaning.”

To be honest, I didn’t reach my higher realms of meaning or any higher sense of self that is… but what I do know is, that it was an experience I urge every one to try.

Here are my 4 most loved benefits of fasting, which I hope will motivate you to start too.

1. Mental Clarity

I was on day 1 of my first fasting experience, and after having my last meal just 20 hours ago, I found myself hiking for 3 hours after just having a black coffee and some water. I never felt better. I was energized, the fog had cleared in my brain, and my endorphins were rushing through me like I was on my way to an exciting music festival. I was sharp, quick, and mentally structured, which I had never experienced before. Need a boost before an important presentation? Here is your tool.

2. Self-Control

Every decision one makes is important, isn’t it? If you have a track record of bad decisions, you end up with a ‘not so happy life’. This all comes down to lack of self-control. And if you cant control yourself, then what can you control?

If you need to learn self-discipline, let me tell you, fasting is the way to do it. You are constantly choosing NOT to eat, even when you are hungry. If you get good at fasting, you get good at discipline, you get good at life. Period.

3. Weight-loss & Detox

Although my goal wasn’t weight-loss, loosing a couple of pounds and water weight was an added benefit to this whole fasting-thing. (Lets be honest, ladies, who doesn’t love to wake up in the morning and feel like your pants are a little looser?) With that in mind, this brings more confidence in you, thus, more confidence in the workplace. On top of that, scientists say that it is a complete reboot of your entire immune system just after 24 hours. I am sure we all have years of guilty junk food eating habits, so the thought of clearing all those toxins sounded peachy.

4. Grit

As Angela Duckworth, psychologist and popular science author, put it in her TED Talk: “Grit is the power of passion and perseverance.” Why is this so important? It helps you focus on long-term and meaningful goals whilst giving you the ability to persist and move through difficult obstacles.

On day 2 of my fasting experience, I had a minor (well it was a major) emotional breakdown. Google said I had severe “carb withdrawal symptoms”. I felt like I was in rehab. I was literally crying on the couch wanting food and begging my partner to get me something to eat. I felt ridiculous. But I guess my ‘Grit’ got me through it, and I never felt better the next day.

Would I do it again? Probably not, but with the benefits I might consider it. Experts say you should be fasting 2-3 times a year. Practice makes perfect, right? I felt incredibly proud when I finished my 72 hours of fasting. This boosted my self-confidence and provided mental strength and assurance that I can deal with difficult situations and temptations. I feel incredibly focused and motivated, and have the willpower to push through anything – and so should you.

Are you ready to find out how loving yourself can make you more productive?

Are you ready to find out how loving yourself can make you more productive?

When last have you complimented yourself?

I bet you’re sitting there thinking to yourself – “What is this person on about?” Well if that is your response then I would imagine it’s been a while since you told yourself something nice, something nice about yourself.

It may sound strange, I mean I also had to think about it when the question got asked of me, but the truth is that we really should be looking at ourselves more as human beings and loving ourselves as much as we love those around us.

In this article I will discuss why it is important to love yourself, how taking care of YOU can make YOU more productive in business and in life and sharing some ideas to help you love yourself more this year.

Let’s make 2020 about you!

Why should you love yourself?

I think that sometimes we forget we are human beings and that we are not invincible – even though you may feel like you are. We spend so much time focusing on the work, the housework, the kids, the husband, family and so on that we leave very little room for ourselves – the one person who matters the most in the equation.

When you neglect yourself, it becomes a snowball effect, you get burnout or your mental wellbeing suffers and this then reflects in the work you produce or fail to produce. It causes stress and conflict in our relationships and eventually we start shutting down.

We are not robots and we cannot go on and on forever because we do not run on Duracell batteries. As women especially we need to sit back and take a breath and take time for ourselves.

Loving yourself is important so that you can feel like a person too. When you love yourself, you will feel more energized and more at peace with things. Loving yourself is essentially taking care of you! Taking time out for you even if it is only once a week – rather once a week than nothing at all!

And remember, when you take time out and reflect and be at one with yourself you will also become more productive.

Read on to find out how loving yourself can make you more productive.

How can loving myself increase productivity?

Making self-care a regular part of your routine could mean a greater increase in productivity in work and play for various reasons:

  • You will feel more relaxed and therefore more clear and focused on tasks at hand
  • You will possibly eliminate chronic pain and fatigue if you make regular massages part of your self-care routine and with that meditation and mindfulness techniques.
  • Your mental wellbeing will improve as it has being shown that when we neglect ourselves the increase in depression is exponential and this can definitely have a negative impact on your productivity levels.

So, in short, keeping your wellbeing in mind as often as possible is only going to be to the benefit of everything and everyone in your life – so do not worry about people possibly thinking you’re selfish or weak because you are stepping away from things for a while.

Ways you can love yourself to increase productivity

In this part of the article I will allude to various articles on how you can bring self-care into your world in order to be more productive.

You can imagine things like yoga, gym, meditation, a spa day or even just going to sit in the garden with a cup of tea (or something else if you so inclined) and listen to the birds chirping – these are all examples of self-care and self-love. Spending time with you doing something you love and enjoy!

Here is a video about why you need a self-care list and how to draw up one.

The Secret Reason You Want Women in Top Leadership and Executive Positions in Your Company

The Secret Reason You Want Women in Top Leadership and Executive Positions in Your Company

The Secret Reason You Want Women in Top Leadership and Executive Positions in Your Company

When it comes to business, everyone from the entrepreneur to big corporates needs to listen up and take note of this interesting development in the business world. Although the number of women in executive roles in companies is often limited to a single-digit percentage, studies are increasingly proving that if companies want to increase their profit, they need to rethink their strategy on gender diversity within the company.

Why it’s important to have gender diversity in your company.

In January 2018, McKinsey & Company published their 42-page report Delivering through Diversity on their findings with regards to valuable aspects of this very topic. They found that “Companies in the top-quartile for gender diversity on their executive teams were 21% more likely to have above-average profitability than companies in the fourth quartile.”

I don’t know about you, but this statistic really had me sitting up straight. So often we as women don’t even realize the importance of our contribution to the business environment. We often focus so extensively on get the job done despite facing challenges, raising families and contributing to our communities that we undervalue ourselves. I, of course, am of the opinion, that if we don’t know and acknowledge our worth first, no one else will.

Personal challenges women face that are featuring in executive leadership roles globally

It goes without saying that featuring in these executive roles brings challenges of their own for these successful women. Just like a normal wife and mother she has duties to fulfil that lie outside her corporate duties. The reality is that their male counterparts, especially those without children rarely understand the extreme stress and challenges these women face and they rarely have empathy for women in these situations.

What type of support do they need?

It doesn’t need to limit women’s opportunities to excel in the business environment. As women, we can support each other to better achieve our individual goals. Handling personal finances, paying bills, diary management, travel arrangements, event planning, holiday itineraries, the list goes on… The fun part for me is knowing that there’s always a solution for these types of challenges. And no, it’s not a personal assistant, but rather a Virtual Assistant. Both may have similar skillsets but there’s a fundamental difference between a personal assistant and a Virtual Assistant. That difference is mindset!  A personal assistant is invaluable but has the mindset of an employee. The right Virtual Assistant is an entrepreneur in her own right, so she already has a growth mindset, a get the job done attitude. A no-excuses mentality. She is focused on results!

Stronger together

It’s so important for us as women to empower each other the reach our goals and dreams. It’s within our grasp if we support each other. There’s no shame in getting help. We don’t have to do everything ourselves. We just need to know where to get the right assistance. As mothers and wives, we often face this tremendous guilt when it comes to our jobs and families. We are always spreading ourselves too thin. Feeling guilty if we need to take time away from work to spend with our children or families. Even taking your child for a dental appointment can seem like a mountain.

My suggestion? Get that trusted support that will free up your time so you can focus on the quality events in your family, children and work. Value yourself and your loved ones enough to let go of some things.

Let’s celebrate each other’s strengths and support each other’s weaknesses. Together there are no limits to what we can accomplish!

How to have a good working relationship with your Virtual Assistant

How to have a good working relationship with your Virtual Assistant

Start out with an open mind

If you have never worked with a Virtual Assistant before, first think of how it can benefit you and your business working this way.  Understand that the transition from having an assistant in your office to working remotely is going to be an adjustment and allow for that.

Communication

Garbled communication produces garbled results and is a huge time waster.  Decide exactly what it is that you want your Virtual Assistant to do and how you will communicate it to him or her in a way that is clearly and easily understood.  Schedule a way of communication that is done daily or weekly as standard and should anything else come up that needs to be dealt with, let your Virtual Assistant know through what means you would prefer communication, be it via phone, WhatsApp, email etc and inform him or her beforehand when you know that you are not going to be available for a period of time.

Delegate

Learn to be a good delegator.  This is sometimes a problem for a start up business that started out with one person making all the decision and doing everything themselves.  Understand that you are working with another individual that possibly doesn’t see everything as you do, so may produce results in a slightly different way than you did.  Take a step back and look at the result from a different perspective and you might be pleasantly surprised to see that the result is better than what you produced originally.

Goals and time management

Let you Virtual Assistant know what is going to be expected of them and what takes priority.  Be realistic in what is expected of him or her within their specified work hours.  Plan ahead of time and set goals for when certain tasks or projects need to be completed by and communicate this clearly.  If something else comes up that needs to be done urgently, realise that there will be a delay in getting other tasks or projects done within the original planned timeframe.

Mutual Respect and Trust

If your Virtual Assistant feels that they are appreciated and respected, they will feel a sense of commitment to you and your business.  Be open to hear other opinions, your idea might not always be the best idea.  Show them that you value their positive input and even constructive criticism. as this will make them feel more part of the team and even more committed to the growth of your business.

Morals and Ethical Practice

If you’re wanting a professional Virtual Assistant to be dedicated and committed to your business, don’t expect him or her to stay if you are in the habit of unethical business practice.  Being clear about what is and what is not acceptable in your business dealings, will remove any grey areas and you will gain your Virtual Assistant’s respect and trust as well as your customer’s.  Be upfront and let your Virtual Assistant know exactly what you and your business stand for before you start your working relationship.

4 Secrets to Growing Your Business’ Sales Exponentially This Year With The Use of Social Media

What new small business owner or entrepreneur doesn’t need MORE SALES in their business? Especially when it’s free! Social Media offers endless potential and opportunities for the young entrepreneur or established company to drive traffic to their website and increase their sales for free. In this beginner’s guide to using social media for growing your sales, we are going to take an in-depth look at what it takes to drive that potential sales through the roof using social media to target your audience. In this modern day there’s not a person that doesn’t have a mobile device which is excellent news for the business owner. Just imagine crushing those sales goals when you have the right audience at your disposal – a global audience available 24/7, 365 days of the year!

#1 Do your research

What you want is knowledge about your audience before starting any campaigns on social media. Consider and research the demographics of your target audience and use the information to determine which social media platforms to use to reach them and what type of media would be most likely to succeed.

#2 Quality content vs Quantity content

So, this is where you expect me to say, “Start a blog”, right? Wrong! If you don’t already have a blog for your website, you’re missing out on one of the most powerful FREE marketing tools to boost those sales and you might want to take a step back and first take a look at where to start when writing a blog post or how to improve your blogging.  Our focus is on social media so that means you’ll need quality content to share. Take note my emphasis on quality content. Your biggest faux pax on social media is to share a whole lot of content without providing value to your audience. Don’t just post and share random stuff. Make sure what you have to say or share will either engage or entertain your audience.

A good guide is to use the 80-20 rule, which means you share 80% content that engage and entertain the audience and 20% sales content. Hard-selling is a definite NO! It adds a desperate flavour to your business that will chase away your target audience faster than you can schedule your next post.

#3 Consistency is key

Nothing is of greater value to improve your business’ online visibility than consistency. If you stuck to rule number two your content will be of value to your audience. It doesn’t matter if it’s a blog, motivational quote or short video, Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. Your audience will be anticipating your next post. A social media calendar will enable you to plan your posts to coincide with special dates and events to maximize the effect of your content. So, what’s better than using a social media scheduling tool to make sure you free up your time while sharing quality content on a consistent basis to all the platforms and targeted audiences of your choice.

#4 Engaging with your audience

Social media is about engaging your followers. If you don’t grasp that concept first and foremost your hard work will all be for nothing. Nothing is as important as responding to your audience’s conversations, likes and shares. This is how you build trust in your brand and develop a relationship that turns a follower into a client.

Be intentional

Do the research, create or curate the content. Be intentional, be consistent, find your own voice and style. In a world where we are often overloaded with digital content, we need to be unique. AND we are – so use it to your advantage to outshine your competition. You’ll be amazed at the results!!
